Pet store to hold 'autism hour' on Sunday

AUTISTIC people will be able to avoid the ‘information overload’ during an autism-friendly hour of shopping at Rugby’s Pets At Home store tomorrow.

The Technology Park store will hold an Autism Hour at 9-10am on Sunday (October 8) as part of an initiative from the National Autistic Society.

The society is asking shops and businesses to take simple steps that will lead to a more autism-friendly world, after revealing 64 per cent of autistic people avoid going to the shops.

Autistic people – who see, hear and feel the world in a different, often more intense way – often struggle to filter out information, which means they feel overwhelmed when out in public.

Pets at Home will dim the lights, turn down music and till bells, and share information about autism with employees to make the store more autism-friendly.

Rugby branch manager Philip Bevington said: “This is a fantastic initiative and one we are extremely pleased to be a part of.

“Our store will be opening an hour earlier on Sunday October 8 and we will be providing a relaxed, stress free, autism friendly space for our customers.”

Mark Lever, CEO at the National Autistic Society said: “It is really encouraging to see shops and services getting involved in Autism Hour.

“Like anyone, people on the autism spectrum and their families want the opportunity to go to the shops, but many find the often busy, loud and unpredictable environment of public places overwhelming and avoid them altogether.

“Our Too Much Information campaign has highlighted that the smallest changes can make the biggest difference for autistic people and we are confident this week-long event around the UK will help shops and services understand how we can work towards a more autism friendly world.”
