Pig farm plan prompts fears for disabled horse riding school

A HORSE riding school for disabled children near Rugby fears for its future.

The Woodbine Riding Stables in Granborough is objecting to proposals to put a pig farm with some 2,500 animals next door to the centre.

Staff claim the plans would have health and safety implications for the school – whose pupils include disabled children and those with behavioral issues – and are also concerned noise from the pigs could unnerve the horses.

JA SM Evans, which owns Grange Farm, initially put the proposal through last year but withdrew after the council requested to carry out a wildlife survey in the area.

If the proposals get the green light, two buildings would each contain 1,125 pigs, as well as a slurry store.

The application states pig’rearing would provide an additional income for the business, and also valuable fertilizer in the form of manure.

One of the biggest concerns of staff is large lorries carrying the pigs and supplies along the single track road regularly used by horses and riders.

A spokesperson for the stables said: “Having to close the school down would be devastating for the children and disabled riders as this is where they spend their weekends with horses and have fun learning something new.

“It’s a fun a challenge for disabled riders giving them the time to relax and enjoy something different.”

The business which started over 30 years ago with just two horses, teaches up to 30 children and adults a week – their oldest rider being aged 82.

Rugby Borough Council is set to make a decision after a consultation on the proposals ends on June 29.
