POLICE have been called to Rugby town centre amid reports of social gatherings of more than two people – currently illegal under the Coronavirus lockdown.

Writing on social media, a spokesperson for Rugby Police said: “The government has been clear that everyone has their part to play regarding social distancing.

“We can’t stress enough that this is a national health emergency.”

Members of the public posted in support of the police.

One said: “Good luck Rugby Police. We appreciate all you do, along with all emergency workers, NHS staff, and all the other key workers out there.

“You have a mammoth task ahead and I know that the majority of Rugby people will abide by all the rules put in place for theirs and others safety. If they don’t, and they meet you, well then it’s their own fault.”
