NEW Warwickshire Police chief Martin Jelley is aiming to nip crime in the bud.

Mr Jelley has taken over as chief constable following the retirement of Andy Parker and is looking to bring crime levels down by stopping it happening in the first place.

He said: “Tackling criminality head on has always been my approach and the focus on this through day to day policing and operations will remain.

“I am keen we seek whenever possible to prevent crime in the first place, and seek to protect the most vulnerable in our communities from harm and ensure we are developing our capabilities.

“I will be committed to making sure the alliance with West Mercia Police develops and strengthens. I will seek to ensure Warwickshire Police has a strong voice within what I know will continue to be a flourishing alliance.”

Ron Ball, Warwickshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, has already given his backing to Mr Jelley who is currently being investigated for potential gross misconduct while deputy chief constable of neighbouring Northamptonshire Police.

Mr Ball said: “I’m delighted to welcome Martin Jelley as Warwickshire Police’s new chief constable. He brings with him a great deal of experience and knowledge, and will be a real asset to the force. I very much look forward to working with him.”

Mr Jelley has been a police officer for 26 years. He started his career in Norfolk Police where he spent 16 years, followed by five years in Suffolk Police and just over five years in Northamptonshire Police, most recently as second in command as deputy chief constable.

His background within policing is broad and includes significant periods as a detective, a firearms officer and a commander for both firearms and public order.
