Police engage with Warwickshire communities during knife crime awareness week

POLICE in Warwickshire have taken part in over 25 community initiatives during a week-long initiative to tackle knife crime.

Last week, Warwickshire Police officers took part in Operation Sceptre, a national campaign that brings police forces together in knife crime prevention and education, as well as targeted operations alongside partner agencies.

Activities included knife sweeps in the county’s green spaces, presentations to schools, targeted leafleting campaigns, engagement with local retailers, and test purchase operations to ensure that knives are not being sold to under 18s.

A major focus was to raise awareness of impacts and consequences associated with carrying a knife and to provide a safe and anonymous disposal mechanism. ‘No questions asked’ surrender bins were located at Rugby, Leamington and Nuneaton police stations, and Safer Neighbourhood Teams were working in the community with ‘pop up’ surrender bins at various key locations.

The number of knives that were surrendered in the county is currently being collated.

Supt Mike Smith said: “Operation Sceptre puts the spotlight on the devastating impacts of knife crime, and encourages anyone who may be tempted to carry a knife for whatever reason, to think again.

“We are determined to tackle knife crime and will continue with proactive policing to prevent incidents and bring offenders to justice.

“Everyone has their part to play in building safer communities and I’d like to thank local people for their continued support. It is vital that anyone with concerns or information comes forward – a seemingly small piece of information could ultimately save a life.”

Call police on 101, or 999 in an emergency, to report knife crime. Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
