Police investigating reports of illegal fox hunting in Warwickshire

REPORTS of illegal fox hunting in Warwickshire are being investigated by police.

West Midlands Hunt Saboteurs (WMHS) claim they filmed the Warwickshire Hunt killing a fox during a hunt near Walton on Wednesday (February 16).

The video allegedly shows dogs ripping the fox in half, and its remains being picked up by a huntsman.

WMHS says the video also features footage of huntsmen and their dogs forcing vehicles to stop on the A429 and the Fosse Road while they hunted.

The group claims it is the sixth kill by the Warwickshire Hunt they have filmed since September, including incidents in Arlescote, Honington and Ettington.

A WMHS spokesperson said: “The Warwickshire Hunt can say what they want and can come out with the usual excuses about accidents but this is the sixth time we have filmed them killing wildlife since September. Every time they kill their excuses get more and more unbelievable.

“These incidents are completely avoidable. If you think your dog is dangerous and likely to attack another animal, you simply don’t let it loose in the countryside and put it in that situation.

“What this demonstrates is that the current law is not working. Friday February 18 was the 17th anniversary of the Hunting Act. It needs to be strengthened to eliminate all loopholes. There needs to be a complete total ban on all forms of hunting with hounds.”

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said it had received a report of a fox being killed at a hunt in Walton.

He said: “Enquiries are being carried out by the force’s rural crime team.

“We would encourage anyone with footage of the incident to make contact with the police to arrange for the original footage to be handed over as part of enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 255 of February 16.

Warwickshire Hunt has not responded to a request for comment.
