Police urge vigilance over 'tech support' computer virus

Correspondent 27th May, 2017   0

POLICE are warning internet users to be vigilant after receiving reports of victims handing over money to ‘tech support’ scammers.

Fraudsters claiming to be from Microsoft have been using the same ‘ransomware’ virus which recently caused chaos for hospitals across the country.

One victim fell prey after calling a ‘help’ number advertised on a pop-up window, and fraudsters took a payment of £320 to install an anti-virus tool, usually available for free.

Police are reminding people that warning messages on PCs should never include a phone number and communication with Microsoft is always initiated by the user.

Victims of fraud or those concerned should call the Action Fraud line on 0300 123 2040.
