Police warn Rugby residents to beware 'Inland Revenue' phone scam

Rugby Editorial 10th Aug, 2016 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

SCAM phone calls purportedly from the Inland Revenue have been reported around Rugby.

Several residents have told police they have had a call saying that they owe money to HMRC Inland Revenue. The automated message urges victims to press a key on their phone for more details.

This is is a scam and HMRC, banks and the police would never ring people in this manner or ask for personal or bank details over the phone.

Police advised anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and report it by calling 101 using another phone. In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress, call 999.

Calls can also be reported to Action Fraud via their website or on 0300 123 2040.

Officers also advised those with elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam to make them aware.
