Pot of gold will help Rainbows climb high

A RAINBOWS group in Rugby’s new neighbourhood has received a pot of gold to fund outings and activities.

Houlton resident Tracey Nicholls set up 1st Houlton Rainbows – a Girl Guide group for five to seven-year-olds – shortly after moving in.

And she was delighted when housebuilder Davidsons Homes – the developer behind Houlton’s Dollman Meadow estate – offered to contribute £500 to the group.

The donations means the group can enjoy more activities – and will allow Tracey to start Brownies and Guides groups for older children.

She said: “I asked Davidsons Homes if they would consider donating towards stationery and craft materials and was blown away when they said they’d give us £500.

“This donation means as a brand new unit we can host more outings and activities.

“It allows children from all backgrounds to join Girl Guiding – it’s an amazing opportunity for them to grow as a person in a safe environment and learn skills for life.”

School office administrator Tracey – who lives in Houlton with her husband Andrew and children Luke, 17, and Zara, 12 – has been a Rainbows leader for five years, having previously run a group at Galley Common.

When she moved to Houlton last year, she put an appeal on the Houlton Facebook page asking if anyone would like to join her in setting up a new group.

She was delighted to get replies from three volunteers who have become Rainbows leaders with her.

There are currently nine girls in the group, which meets on Fridays at St Gabriel’s C of E Academy – but there is space for up to 20.

Simon Tyler of Davidsons Homes said: “We’re pleased to be able to support the 1st Houlton Rainbows as they get established within the growing community.

“We hope the funds ensure lots more children in the community can get involved.

“It is also great to hear that our donation will open up new opportunities for older girls to get involved as well.”
