Project offering free supermarket food to Rugby charities, schools and community groups

FREE fresh food is up for grabs for charities, schools and community groups in Rugby.

The Community Food Connection project, a collaboration between charity FareShare and Tesco, donates surplus bread, pastries, fruit, vegetables, cereals and chilled goods from the supermarket’s four Rugby branches – but it is struggling to find organisations who could benefit.

The scheme supports youth clubs, schools, and projects that address issues like isolation, food poverty, homelessness and domestic abuse.

Sarvjit Kaur, FareShare’s community coordinator in the West Midlands, said: “We have some great foods to give away to the right kind of organisations – and there are no strings attached.

“The scheme can really make a difference to a charity and community group, and we’d really like to see it succeed in the Rugby area.

“We can’t guarantee precisely what will be available on a daily basis – but it will be of good quality and it will really make a big difference to the lives to the beneficiaries.

“The foods can be used to cook meals, or handed over to people as a food parcel. There’s a lot of flexibility in terms of how it can be used.

“If you are an organisation that does good in the local community by helping people, and you have a need for fresh food, then we want to hear from you.”

In the three years since it started, the Community Food Connection project has distributed more than 17million meals to people trapped in food poverty throughout the UK, saving the charitable sector more than £5million.

Any organisation interested in joining the scheme must prove it complies with basic food hygiene standards, and commit to collecting food from Tesco on a weekly basis.
