Pupils' career prospects take off during airport visit

THE SKY is the limit for school pupils who learnt about how they could qualify as pilots during a visit to a local airport.

A dozen pupils from Avon Valley School spent a day at ALMAT Flying Academy, based as Coventry Airport, where they saw the flying school’s fleet of aircraft, carried out safety checks, learnt about navigation and heard about how to become a qualified pilot.

They also put their skills to the test on a realistic flight simulator where they attempted to take off and land at a simulated version of Birmingham International airport.

And while touring the airport’s facilities, including the runway and control tower, the students heard from a pilot from the WNDLR air ambulance along with the ambulance and fire crew based at the airport.

Achievement leader Lisa Owen said: “Our students had a wonderful day at the airport and found out about many jobs and roles, including the training to become a pilot.

“They really enjoyed being in the control tower where the saw planes take off and land. Some of the students did an excellent job on the simulator – however, others need a bit more practice before they take to the air.”
