A SPRING clean of the town is on the cards after Rugby Borough Council backed a national ‘Clean for The Queen’ campaign.
The campaign aims to recruit an army of volunteers to help give the country a tidy-up ahead of the Queen’s official 90th birthday celebrations.
Community groups and local councils are urged to sign up before the cleaning weekend takes place from March 4-6.
The council got the ball rolling in Rugby with a volunteer litter pick on the Great Central Walk, off Abbey Street.
Councillors, including Mayor of Rugby Coun Richard Dodd and Coun Lisa Parker, joined fellow staff for the clean-up.
Coun Parker said: “The whole community has a role to play in helping to keep our borough litter-free.
“More than two million pieces of litter get dropped on UK streets every day, resulting in a considerable cost to the environment and the taxpayer.
“By supporting the Clean for The Queen campaign, we hope to highlight the issue, encourage community action and play our part in paying a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s dedicated service to this country.”
Schools and other community groups are being urged to sign up. Call 01788 533857, visit www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk or email [email protected].
