Road safety campaigning couple honoured by the King

A HUSBAND and wife from Rugby who have campaigned tirelessly to improve road safety following the death of their daughter have been awarded British Empire Medals.

George and Giulietta Galli-Atkinson founded the Livia Award in memory of their daughter Livia, to recognise the work of police road traffic investigators who investigated her case.

Livia was killed in 1998 while walking to her ballet class when a driver mounted the pavement and careered into her.

When the case came to trial, the judge decided a custodial sentence was not necessary and instead issued a £2,000 fine, ten points on the driver’s licence and a five-year ban.

The family appealed against the decision, and eventually pursued a civil case against the driver after the criminal appeal route was exhausted without success.

They decided to honour Livia’s memory by setting up the award to recognise the work of the police officers.

The award has gone from humble beginnings as a personal expression of thanks to

a major campaign which has led to tougher sentences for drivers who kill and cause injury.

The couple have also helped delivered road safety training to some 100,000 secondary school children across the country.

Mr Atkinson told the BBC: “It’s a suitable memorial for our daughter Livia for all the work that we have done, we’ve contributed to something that we’ve really believed in needed doing.

“We’re very humbled and delighted to have won it because it acknowledges what we’ve done with road safety.”

A total of 14 Warwickshire residents were honoured by the King.

Tim Cox, Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, the King’s representative in the county, said: “It is great see so many people from across Warwickshire being acknowledged in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours. We have extraordinary people in our county who make a big difference to the lives of others, and I am delighted that their hard work and contributions to society have been recognised in this way.”
