Royal Land Rover, fast Fords and celebrity motors break records at Stoneleigh car auction

Rugby Editorial 5th Mar, 2023   0

A LAND Rover owned by the late Duke Edinburgh, a trio of super fast Fords and a couple of celebrity motors were among the star lots at a world-record breaking car auction held at Stoneleigh Park.

A Land Rover Defender 110, previously used by Prince Phillip, and like all the Duke’s Land Rovers it was built to his individual specification, saw a final hammer price of £123,750. Its pre-sale estimate was £50,000 to £70,000.

Accompanying the 4×4 was its service book, MOTs and service receipts, and only had 15,623 miles on the clock.

It was painted in the rare colour called Keswick Green, and while in the Duke’s possession, it is believed to have been assigned his personal registration OXR 2.

It was not the only lot to produce fierce bidding at the auction held by locally-based classic car specialists Silverstone Auctions.

A Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 sold for a staggering £596,250 following a bidding war between an online bidder in Dubai and one in the UK.

The hammer price was 30 times the 1987 original showroom price of £19,950, and over four times the previous record of £132,750 for the model.

A Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4×4 made £109,125, smashing its £50,000 estimate to also set a new world record, and a Ford GT beat its estimate to sell for £265,500.

A 1966 Lotus Elan S3 Drophead Coupe – known as ‘Emma Peel of The Avengers’ – made £164,250, another new world record for the model.

After filming series five and six of The Avengers, the television company gave the sports car to Diana Rigg, who played Emma Peel in 51 episodes of the long-running 60s British TV series.

It was not the only car in the auction with a famous previous owner.

Rowan Atkinson’s Lancia exceeded its guide price making £87,750. The Evoluzione II model was the personal car of the actor, comedian and self-proclaimed petrol head of Black Adder and Mr Bean fame. It had a pre-sale estimate of £65,000 to £75,000.
