RSPCA investigates after dumped mum and pups found

Rugby Editorial 28th Aug, 2018   0

THE RSPCA is investigating after an emaciated pup was found dumped in Rugby.

The pup – later named Penfold – was found in Pinfold Street on Sunday (August 19) with infected bites on his ears, severly dehydrated and underweight.

Just days later his mum and two more puppies were found abandoned nearby.

The mum – a shar pei type – was very skinny and had pressure sores down her legs.

Investigators – who were called by the dog warden and Pawprints Dog Rescue – believe publicity on social media led to Penfold’s mum and siblings being abandoned after the owner panicked.

Inspector Herchey Boal said: “I find the circumstances that these dogs were found in extremely suspicious and they obviously weren’t receiving the appropriate care in their previous home.

“I’m keen to find out where these dogs came from and who’s responsible for letting them get into such poor condition and then abandoning them.

“It’s really upsetting when the animal – like this weak mum and her young pups – is so vulnerable. It’s disgusting and there’s absolutely no excuse to treat any animal with such disregard.”

Mum, now called Clara, and her eight-week-old pups – Penfold, Ellie and Leeka – are being cared for by RSPCA staff and volunteers at the centre in Coventry, and are doing well.

Insp Boal added: “Thankfully these beautiful dogs are now safe and will receive all the TLC they need.

“The dog warden had given Penfold a big, fluffy teddy to snuggle up with. When he was set up in his kennel he went straight to his new favourite toy, cuddled up next to it and went straight to sleep.

“It was adorable and it’s so lovely to see him relaxed and content.”

Anyone with information about the mum and pups is asked to ring 0300 123 8018 and speak to RSPCA inspectors.
