Rugby amateur boxers 'devastated' at loss of 17-year home

AFTER being turfed out of their gym, an amateur boxing group from Rugby is desperately seeking a new home.

Members of the George Bilton Amateur Boxing Club were devastated to hear the gym they have been training in for more than 17 years will be closed and turned into storage units by the leaseholder.

The landlord of the neighbouring George pub has ordered the out-building, which currently houses the club, to be emptied.

Volunteers who help to run the small gym on Bilton Road were told they must clear out by May.

Home to around 30 young and senior boxers, the club has been part of the community since 1998, helping to hone the skills of boxers from Rugby and Daventry.

Club Secretary Jon Finch told the Observer: “Obviously this has hit us all very hard as we have a number of youngsters and adults who have trained and competed for us over the years that soon won’t have a place to train.

“There is a lot of history at the George and we have had a number of successful boxers over the years with some turning professional. We can no longer support these up-and-coming boxers without a gym of our own.”

He added the club only need somewhere small – enough to house an eight foot by eight foot ring and five boxing bags.

Jon added: “As we are a voluntary organisation we never had to pay any rent as we always offered sponsorship in return. We have always had this small gym to call our home and now we just need someone to help us find a new place to train.”

The group have approached local businesses and the borough council – but neither could help find an alternative.

Anyone with suggestions of an alternative venue is invited to get in touch.
