RUGBY Borough Council remains without any overall control following last week’s election.
A third of the 42 borough council seats were up for grabs as the voters went to the polls.
Of the 14 seats, the Conservatives took seven seats, Labour and the Liberal Democrats came away with three seats each, and the final seat was claimed by an Independent councillor.
Three seats changed hands – Labour’s Kieren Brown won the Newbold and Brownsover seat previously controlled by the Independent Socialists; The Hillmorton ward seat was won by David Cranham for the Tories from an Independent; and Lib Dem Carie-Anne Dumbleton took the Rokeby and Overslade seat from Labour.
The council is now made up of 21 Conservative councillors, nine Labour, nine Liberal Democrats, two Independent Socialists and one Independent.
Last year, the Tories lost overall control following two councillors leaving the Conservatives, and have failed to win it back.
Coun Jim Buckley was dismissed from the party following controversy over an offensive tweet. He did not stand for re-election, and his Hillmorton seat was won by Tory candidate David Cranham.
Coun David Ellis left the conservatives after disputes with the council leader over the borough’s refusal to rule out joining the West Midlands Combined Authority. He remains on the council as an independent.
