A WORTHY cause in Rugby was bowled over when it received a generous donation from a sports club in the town.
At the end of their 2024 season, Rugby Police Bowls Club presented £1,750 to the club’s nominated charity of the year, Rugby Dementia Support.
The donation will help the charity – which does not receive any regular funding – to continue supporting the sufferers of dementia and their carers through meetings and activities, as well as offering some respite to the carers.
Bernie Bayliss, the Secretary of Rugby Dementia Support, said: “Wow, this is an amazing amount of money!
“This will help us to continue our support, especially as we are having an ever-increasing number of new people joining us.
“A huge thank you to all club members for supporting the charity.”
The money was collected by the club’s membership throughout the bowling season, as well as by its tourists during a long weekend tour in Somerset.
David Owen, the Chair of Rugby Police Bowls Club, said: “In this day and age, when more and more people are being diagnosed with this condition, I cannot believe that an organisation which provides the care and support that Rugby Dementia Support does has to rely on donations to exist.
“I would like to thank our members and tourists who have given so freely of their money to obtain this great sum for such very worthwhile cause.”
Rugby Police Bowls Club was founded in 1946 by JG Wood, then the Superintendent in charge of Rugby Police Station.
Although some current members are former officers, the club no longer has any links with the local police station or Warwickshire Police, and therefore relies on members of the public to continue.
New members are welcome. Visit www.rugbypolicebowlsclub.org.uk for more information.
