A RUGBY charity has launched its Christmas appeal to help Zimbabwean farmers and their families double their harvest.
Poverty organisation Practical Action aims to raise more than a million pounds to help African families overcome extreme weather.
In parts of Zimbabwe, a quarter of households face the threat of hunger due to the effects of climate change such as drought and flash flooding – but the charity hopes to provide solutions, knowledge and skills building to help farmers beat poverty and hunger for good.
The project will combine education, skills training and solar-powered water pumps to enable farmers to sell surplus and cash crops, increase income and provide fresh food for their community.
Rugby MP Mark Pawsey joined pupils from Hillmorton Primary School and Practical Action staff to officially launch the fundraising appeal alongside the charity’s Albert Street bookshop, featuring a range of books about global issues and sustainable living.
The new bookshop in Albert Street. 51.018.002.rug.jm2Mr Pawsey said: “Climate change is a huge global issue that is causing serious problems for the most vulnerable people around the world.
“It’s an honour to launch this important appeal on behalf of such a fantastic charity and to open their new bookshop, which will be an asset to Rugby town centre. I would also urge local people to give whatever they can to help them meet their target.”
Every pound donated up until the appeal ends next March will be matched by the Government.
