A CHARITY group from Rugby rang in its first anniversary helping local families with young children with autism.

The Rugby Autism Network Charity celebrated their first year of progress at their first AGM – looking back at a successful year of help and support in the town.

The team – which provides support to more than 50 families across the Rugby area dealing with autism or similar conditions – has been actively raising money to support the Network through a number of events, from running quiz nights and raffles all the way to running 50-mile ultra-marathons.

Donations from local organisations including Sainmsburys, Rugby Darts Club and Hillmorton Brownies Group, and businesses like AECOM and Virgin also helped the Network to its successful first 12 months.

With the added support, the Network has been able to host events including soft play sessions, training for parents and carers, visits to Rugby Fire Station, support meetings, family night outs and autism-friendly swim sessions.

Paul Clarke, one of the founders of the group, said: “Going into our next 12 months, we hope that we can increase awareness of the group and reach out to more and more families in Rugby.

“We estimate only a fifth of families who have direct experience with autism within the local area are registered to the charity, and we are hoping more of them come forward to receive the help and support they need.

“We know there is increased awareness of people coping with lifelong developmental disabilities, especially in schools and workplaces, and we are happy to see more people looking to find ways to support them.”
