A TWITTER campaign run by Rugby Borough Council to promote Love Parks Week has made the shortlist for a national award.
The social media campaign ran throughout the annual celebration of the country’s parks and green spaces in July, and encouraged residents to reveal the personal reasons why Rugby’s parks and green spaces make the borough a better place to live.
The campaign has been shortlisted for the Love Parks Award at the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards, which honours events and campaigns which promote Love Parks Week and its aim of encouraging residents to visit and enjoy parks across the country.
Residents were invited to write messages on special Love Parks Week heart-shaped boards and pose for photographs which were then posted on the council’s Twitter accounts.
Participants completed the sentence: “I love my park because…”.
Pupils at Brownsover Community School wrote: “… we have lots of fun and love the space and equipment.”
A visitor to Caldecott Park wrote: “… the floral displays are fantastic,” while a member of New Bilton Community Association said about Gladstone Green: “… it’s there for everyone to enjoy. It’s a perfectly formed jewel of a pocket park.”
The leader of Rugby Borough Council, Coun Michael Stokes, joined the celebration together with Cllr Lisa Parker, the council’s environment and public realm spokeswoman.
Coun Parker said: “2017 was a memorable year for Rugby’s parks and green spaces, with five Green Flag Awards and gold in the Heart of England in Bloom Awards.
“We know our residents enjoy Rugby’s parks all year round but Love Parks Week gives us the chance to celebrate the important role our green spaces play in the lives of our communities, and I’m delighted our Twitter campaign has been shortlisted for a national award.”
The Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards take place next month at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel.
