Rugby mayor goes blue in support of mouth cancer charity

Rugby Editorial 11th Nov, 2016   0

THE MAYOR of Rugby is hoping to raise awareness for the charity fighting a cancer which almost claimed her life.

Backing Rugby-based charity the Oral Health Foundation’s Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign, Coun Sally Bragg is ready to show off her best blue outfit.

She is urging residents to get involved, spread awareness and join her in wearing blue as part of the charity’s ‘Blue Wednesday’ on November 16.

Coun Bragg chose Oral Health Foundation as one of her nominated charities after suffering from mouth cancer herself 18 years ago.

She said: “Since I was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 1998 public awareness of the disease has increased but it hasn’t grown enough.

“Therefore, I am calling on everybody to get involved in Mouth Cancer Action Month and raise public awareness of the major signs and symptoms of mouth cancer so that we can catch cases early.”

Coun Sally Bragg suffered from a mouth ulcer which showed no signs of healing over three weeks and highlighted how a simple trip to the dentist probably saved her life after a specialist was able to make the diagnosis.

She added: “I’ll never forget the pain I went through at the time but I was given another chance, and I am making the most of it. A trip to the dentist saved my life and early detection gives a better survival rate and that is why I’m urging everybody to get involved in this campaign.

The charity are urging people to wear blue on Wednesday November 16 and help spread awareness on social media with the hashtag #BlueWednesday.
