Rugby MP looks to future of town's rail travel

RUGBY train station’s improvements are well on track, says MP Mark Pawsey.

Mr Pawsey visited the station last week to meet with senior members of Virgin Trains and discuss recent improvements made to the station and the future of the town’s rail connection.

He was shown the new features at the station and introduced to new staff members who will man the new modern ticket barriers.

Mr Pawsey also raised the future of Rugby station, including plans to ensure parking at the station will meet growing demand.

He also mentioned traffic and congestion concerns residents have brought to his attention, particularly on Technology Drive and at the Mill Road tunnel.

Mark said: “As a regular user of Rugby station, I have seen the implementation of the new barriers and it was valuable to be able to speak to Virgin about my own experiences with the changes to the station and that of local residents.

“I was pleased to learn that the barriers will be manned at all times when they are in operation and that access through the tunnel will still be available to pedestrians.

“Rugby station has seen passenger growth ahead of the national average during the last Parliament and I hope that we can continue to build on this success in the future.”

Virgin Trains General Manager Phil Cavender said: “We’ve been proud to serve Rugby for what is fast approaching twenty years. The station is unrecognisable from the one we took over back in 1997. So it was a great opportunity to reflect with Mark not only the progress that has been made but also the exciting plans we have to help address the challenges of the future.

“It is clear Mark shares our passion to improve rail facilities for those travelling to and from the station and we got some great feedback during the meeting.”
