Rugby protesters to voice 'outrage' at decision to suspend Parliament

PROTESTERS will unite outside Rugby Town Hall this afternoon in opposition to The Prime Minister’s controversial decision to suspend parliament.

Announcing the event on Facebook, organisers say the decision is “a dangerous act against due process and democratic debate”.

They added: “The constitution is founded on parliamentary sovereignty and whatever your views on Brexit it needs to be maintained.

“Therefore we will be standing up for our parliament. This is a cross-party peaceful protest and in accordance to the right to peaceful assembly.”

Beck Hemsley, who set up the Facebook page, said that while the small protest in Rugby might not be heard by those in power, the hundreds taking place all over the country would collectively make a statement.

They added: “We cannot stand by and watch the foundations of our democracy be run roughshod over.

“Many people from all parties and those of no party have been struck with outrage, anguish, and frustration at this latest move by Boris Johnson.

“An unelected Prime Minister preventing Parliament from debating on such a momentous moment as Brexit is an absolute affront to our constitution.

“Even many in his cabinet have previously made statements that this would be an unacceptable course of action, and yet here we are.”

On Wednesday, Mr Johnson set in motion the suspension of Parliament for five weeks ahead of October 31, the day the UK is due to leave the EU – meaning MPs will have less time to debate Brexit. Parliament is to be suspended.

Mr Johnson wants to start a new parliamentary session, with a fresh programme, from October 14. Instead of a normal three-week autumn recess, Parliament will now wrap up some time around September 10.

The protest takes place today (Thursday August 29) from 6-7.30pm outside the Town Hall. Visit www.facebook.com/events/1479462852196432 for more information.
