Rugby teacher to become Parliament ambassador

A TEACHER from Rugby will be able to give his pupils an insight into what goes on in the corridors of power after he was accepted onto a prestigious training course run by Parliament.

Ed Wright, the assistant head teacher at Avon Park School, has been accepted onto the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme.

The scheme, hosted by Parliament’s Education and Engagement Service, gives teachers a chance to hear from Parliamentarians across Westminster, including the Speaker of the House, to give them an in-depth understanding of the UK Parliament.

Organisers hope to foster a greater awareness of the issues and challenges of UK democracy in schools throughout the country by working closely with educators.

Mr Wright said: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to gain a greater insight into the workings of Parliament and sharing this with the children at Avon Park.

“I hope to support our school in developing our student council, and help the children see that they can make a difference to the future of their school and country.”

He met with Rugby MP Mark Pawsey ahead of a visit to Westminster.

Mr Pawsey said: “Visiting Parliament is great opportunity for Ed and other teachers to better appreciate the role of Parliament in our modern democracy. The UK Parliament Teachers Institute is a really good way of building links between schools and Westminster as well as helping to develop the leaders of tomorrow.

“I am always delighted to welcome local residents, including schools, to Parliament, and I think that it is really important to encourage young people to take part in our democracy.”
