Rugby Theatre opens auditions for two new shows

Rugby Editorial 28th Feb, 2023   0

AUDITIONS for two new shows at Rugby Theatre have been announced, as three new directors achieve their dream of bringing plays and musicals to life on stage.

Auditions for Ladies Day and Sweeney Todd are open to the public and will take place on March 4 and 11 respectively.

Wendy Kay, Bev Avis-Dakin and Tim Sell completed the theatre’s director course in autumn 2019, but the pandemic delayed their directing debuts.

The Thrill of Love director Wendy Kay is up first, followed by Bev Avis-Dakin who is directing Ladies Day, a comedy about four women from the Hull fish docks on a trip to the races, to be staged in September.

And Tim Sell will direct musical Sweeney Todd, about the bloodthirsty revenge of a London barber, in October.

The Henry Street venue’s acting artistic director Emma Bright said: “Rugby Theatre is run entirely by volunteers, and this includes our highly talented show director team.

“A show director nurtures a show from page to stage, and this year we have three new team members who are bringing their choice of show to our stage.

“We are super excited to not only enjoy the diverse creativity new people bring, but also to watch as our newest recruits develop and add to our ever-growing programme.”

This trio of shows joins the musicals Aspects of Love in April, School of Rock in June, and Youth Project Grease: the Musical in the school summer holidays.

THE FINAL call has gone out for young performers to take part in Rugby Theatre’s summer youth project production of Grease: the Musical.

The last round of auditions – open to actors, singers and dancers aged between 10 and 21 – takes place on Sunday (March 5) from 10am.

Organiser Phil Kettle said: “Grease will be Rugby Theatre’s tribute to Olivia Newton-John, an iconic leading lady who sadly died last year, leaving memories of a wonderful performance in songs such as Hopelessly Devoted to You and You’re The One That I Want.

“Don’t miss your opportunity to be part of this legendary musical.”

The youth project runs from July 29 to August 13. Young people interested in helping backstage are also welcome.
