AN ‘INSPIRATIONAL’ Rugbeian who keeps the borough green and pleasant has been presented with his Member of the British Empire (MBE) medal by the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.

Rugby Borough Council’s parks and grounds manager Chris Worman was made an MBE in recognition of his work to improve the quality of parks and green spaces, having volunteered as a judge for the Green Flag Awards for more than 20 years.

Chris was accompanied by his family to Buckingham Palace.

Chris said: “It was a real honour to be presented with my MBE medal by Prince Charles and I was proud to share such a special moment with my family.

“I have been passionate about parks for as long as I can remember, and the Green Flag Awards share my passion for improving our green spaces and delivering parks which serve the needs of our communities.”

Chris judges for the Green Flag Awards during his days off from managing Rugby’s parks and green spaces. His judging duties have taken him across the UK, to New York and Abu Dhabi, and Buckingham Palace, where he toured the Queen’s private garden in 2012.

On his travels Chris has picked up a number of ideas which he has introduced in Rugby’s parks, including wildflower planting, natural play features, community herb gardens and, most recently, bee hives.

He added: “Green Flag parks all have a detailed management plan, complete with a sustainable vision for the park and how it can be delivered.

“This has helped parks become more resident-focused, delivering the facilities residents want and helping to foster a sense of community ownership.

“Parks and green spaces play a vital role in our communities and I believe my MBE both recognises the importance of parks and the work Green Flag does to raise standards.”

Paul Todd, Green Flag Awards programme manager, said: “Chris is an inspirational figure whose passion for and commitment to providing everyone in this country with the best quality parks is tireless.

“He willingly carries out every request we make of him, visiting volunteer groups, local authorities, universities and private companies who aspire to achieve the Green Flag Award, willingly sharing his knowledge and providing advice and guidance.”

Rugby Borough Council’s environment and public realm spokeswoman Coun Lisa Parker said: “Rugby has benefited from Chris’ passion for parks for many years and I’m delighted his work for the Green Flag Awards has been recognised with this honour.”
