HISTORIC and iconic buildings in Rugby will open to the public for free next month during the town’s Heritage Open Days celebration.

Highlights include free entry to the World Rugby Hall of Fame, guided tours of the CEMEX Rugby Cement Plant and a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of Rainsbrook Crematorium.

Heritage Open Days runs from Thursday September 7 to Sunday September 10.

Tours of the CEMEX plant take place on the Thursday and Friday, offering visitors the chance to climb to the top of the plant’s tower and capture a unique view of Rugby on camera.

Rainsbrook Crematorium holds an open day on the Saturday, where visitors can take a tour of the facilities and explore the crematorium’s grounds and memorial gardens, which were recently honoured with a Green Flag Award.

And on the Sunday, the World Rugby Hall of Fame opens its doors for free.

Historic buildings including Brownsover Hall Hotel and Princethorpe College will also join the Heritage Open Days celebration, while a number of the borough’s churches will also take part, including St Andrew’s in the town centre and the Church of The Ascension at Clifton Road cemetery.

Rose Narrowboats offer free boat trips on the Oxford Canal at Stretton-under-Fosse, and visitors to Coombe Abbey Country Park can explore a Festival of Crafts.

Rugby Borough Council growth and investment spokeswoman Coun Heather Timms said: “Heritage Open Days celebrates the history on our doorsteps and gives residents the chance to explore places which often remain closed to the public.

“We have a packed programme on offer this year and with limited places available on tours, it’s best to book early to secure a place.”

Visit www.therugbytown.co.uk/HOD or go to the Rugby Visitor Centre for details of the full Heritage Open Days programme. Places on tours can be booked in advance by emailing [email protected] or calling the Visitor Centre on (01788) 533217.
