Runners wanted for annual pancake race fundraiser

GOOD causes near and far will benefit from money raised at this year’s Annual Pancake Race.

Members of fundraising group Rugby Rokeby Lions are inviting local people, groups and companies to put on fancy dress costumes and take part in the race, which takes place on Tuesday February 13.

This year the race will help support the hiring of a soft play centre for several monthly sessions for Rugby Autistic Network’s children, and help to fund a Rugby teenager who will deliver literacy skills to women in southern Asia where less than half of the female population is literate.

Money raised will also go towards fighting blindness around the world, and raising the awareness of diabetes and prostate cancer.

In recent years the race has raised funds for a mobility chair for a young girl with cerebral palsy and epilepsy who was born without eyes, and a wooden gazebo for learning disability charity New Directions’s Sensory Garden.

The race winner will receive the Pancake Trophy and the company represented will receive the Pancake Shield to be held for one year. Inscribed trophies will be presented to the entrant who raised the most sponsorship money, and to the entrant with the best fancy dress.

The event starts at 11.30am on Tuesday February 13, outside The Rugby Hotel in Sheep Street. To enter, contact any of the following: Terry Byrne (01788 576011), Graham Yates (01788 521158), John Nelson (01788 331194) or Ian Mills (01788 312845).

*RUGBY Rokeby Lions hitched up Santa’s sleigh to help raise more than £16,000 for good causes across the borough in December.

Santa and his helpers spent 21 evenings travelling around Rugby and 11 days parked up at Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, Elliot’s Field and Rugby Central.

Lions president John Nelson said: “On behalf of Santa, his elves and members of Rugby Rokeby Lions Club, I would like to thank the people of Rugby who so generously supported our various collections over the festive period.

“As well as the usual rounds with our Christmas Sleigh to various neighbourhoods in the Rugby area, we would also like to thank the local supermarkets, along with the staff at both Rugby Central and Elliot’s Field for allowing us to ‘park our sleigh’ at or around their stores.”

Rugby Rokeby Lions Club welcome new members. Call 08458 335916 or visit for further details.
