School readathon to help good cause

THE JOY of reading at Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College will help make life easier for thousands of children in 30 hospitals across the UK.

Students are being invited to join Read for Good’s sponsored readathon, which encourages young people to read as many books as possible to earn sponsorship money.

Funds raised will go to the Read for Good hospital programme, which each year provides 25,000 books to 100,000 children in hospitals across the UK.

Coinciding with the launch of the sponsored read, the school received a library pack from the UK’s largest children’s reading charity BookTrust. The pack, which was funded by the Arts Council England, contains 40 books aims to help students in Years 7-9 read for enjoyment.

English faculty leader Ruth Davies said: “Over the coming weeks we will be launching the readathon to our students during their English lessons, and we will be doing everything we can to encourage them to pick up a book and read.

“This the latest in a line of initiatives which we’ve introduced to boost literacy skills. Our long term project AVS50, which encourages students to read 50 books during their five years at the school, has been well received by the students and we’re sure the readathon will be a success too.”

Head teacher Alison Davies said: “Reading is vitally important to all aspects of learning and it will be wonderful to see our students engaging with the readathon. As a school we are fortunate to have a well stocked library which is well used by our students.”
