Schools offered cut-price life-saving machine

LIFESAVING defibrillators will be made more affordable for schools, the Government has announced.

It has revised its medical guidance to urge schools to consider having the machines that can restart the heart and said it was working to identify a supplier offer them at a competitive price. They currently cost £1,000.

The move has been welcomed by West Midlands Ambulance Service and charity SADS UK which has been working with the mum of a Rugby schoolboy who died suddenly after playing a cricket match for his school almost 10 years ago to get them in various locations around the borough.

There is no formal data on the number of deaths of pupils under the age of 18 in schools, but the Department of Health has estimated around 88 children per year die of sudden cardiac arrest.

Emma Wilkins, head of community response at WMAS, said: “Thankfully it doesn’t happen very often, but it can literally happen to anyone whether they have been diagnosed with a cardiac condition or not.

“We know from the work we do every day just how important such machines can be in saving lives.

“It would be great if every school in the region had a look at the scheme and could make the difference between life or death for one of their pupils.

“For every parent in the region, there is nothing more important than keeping their children safe at school.”

Lawrence Sheriff pupil Joe Spooner died in 2005 at the age of 15 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) after a cricket match.

Since then his parents Tracey and Stephen have been raising funds with the help of cardiac charity SADS UK to put defibrillators into the community.

The charity said it was delighted to have been able to convince education secretary Michael Gove of the benefits of defibrillators.
