Seventh Rugby Festival of Culture hailed as 'best ever'

THE CURTAIN came down on the award-winning Rugby Festival of Culture on Sunday (July 16) – and organisers and visitors have hailed it as the best ever since it began in 2001.

The festival, which took place in Rugby town centre between Saturday June 24 and Sunday July 16, was specially extended this year to include The Festival on the Close – part of Rugby School’s 450th anniversary celebrations.

Aftab Gaffar, Rugby First Managing Director, said: “This is the seventh year the festival has taken place and there is no doubt in my mind that this has been the best so far. Audience numbers have been up and feedback has been excellent.

“It has created a real buzz around the town centre and those businesses, venues, groups and organisations that have been involved with the festival have reported a noticeable increase in trade and footfall which is excellent news for the local economy.

“There were over 100 events taking place in more than 20 town centre locations and I would like to thank all those individuals, volunteers, groups, organisations and businesses that have been involved with the festival for all their hard work and fantastic effort – they have been amazing. A special thank you also to our sponsors and advertisers.”

Rugby Borough Council growth and investment spokeswoman Coun Heather Timms said: “The Rugby Festival of Culture is now an established part of the arts and cultural calendar in Coventry and Warwickshire, and I am thrilled that it continues to draw new audiences into Rugby town centre.

“I would like to congratulate the many artists, actors, musicians and other performers who took part this year, and look forward to working with them to draw up plans for next year’s event.”
