Shoppers help good causes bag a windfall

SHOPPERS have helped three local good causes to a cash windfall.

A total of £5,000 raised from sales of 5p carrier bags at Co-operative stores operated by the Heart of England Co-operative Society has been divided between Rugby Myton Hospice, Rugby Dementia Support and Crick Village Hall – as voted for by customers.

With the most number of votes, Rugby Myton Hospice received £2,500 to continue providing patient and family support services.

Myton, which last year supported more than 1,800 people and their families, has to raise £9.2million of its £12million costs each year.

The hospice recently launched a range of wellbeing services at its day unit to help patients with a life-limiting illness to live well for longer, and support their families and carers.

The charity’s corporate and trust fund-raising manager Hannah Morris said: “We are delighted to have been awarded such an incredible amount.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for us and to the Society for putting us forward for nominations.

“We have to raise £9.2million this year to continue providing our services free of charge and this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the support of the local community and organisations.”

With the second highest number of votes, Rugby Dementia Support received £1,500 while the remaining £1,000 was awarded to Crick Village Hall.
