Shopping park offering grants for green projects

THOUSANDS of pounds are up for grabs for environmental projects thanks to a new grant from the owners of an expanding out-of-town retail park.

Hammerson is celebrating its £20million under-construction extension to Elliott’s Field Shopping Park with the new Elliott’s Field Community Grant.

The grant was launched to coincide with World Green Building Week, as the retail park was recently awarded an interim Outstanding BREEAM rating in addition to becoming the first shopping park in the world designed to be carbon-neutral.

Community groups with an environmental focus can apply for a share of the grant, with a chance to win up to £1,000 each toward projects in the area.

Tom Cochrane, Development Manager at Hammerson, said: “We are delighted that the grant will help community groups with an environmental focus continue their work locally. We are committed to ensuring sustainable economic and environmental contributions in the long term through our Net Positive strategy, and we are very proud that Elliott’s Field is leading the way.”

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said: “I am delighted that Elliott’s Field Phase II is the first shopping park in the world designed to be carbon neutral. This is a great achievement for Rugby and for sustainable development.

“I hope that the standards Hammerson has set at Elliott’s Field will be replicated throughout the industry, ensuring that development enhances and contributes to the local area and the wider environment.”

So far, Dwell, DFS, Furniture Village, Oak Furniture Land, Tapi Carpets and Floors, Halfords, Carpetright and Starbucks have been confirmed for Elliott’s Field ‘phase two’. The new shops are scheduled to open before Christmas.

The £20 million expansion of the shopping park will create around 120 new jobs, and will also include around 500 new parking spaces.

Two new access roads are also being built at the often gridlocked Leicester Road site – one opposite Junction One Retail Park, and one halfway between that and the Tesco roundabout.

Visit to apply for the Elliott’s Field Community Grant. The deadline for entry is midnight on October 29, with the winners announced in late November.

AN ‘AUGMENTED reality’ game will keep kids busy at Elliott’s Field during the half term holidays.

The retail park is running free Scooby Doo-themed reality games and a free Scooby-Doo giveaway.

Shoppers can take part in a treasure hunt throughout the shopping park’s walkway and bring Scooby and the gang to life via free mobile phone app Zappar (

After completing the tour and playing all four games, customers can get their paws on a free Scooby-Doo toy.

The game runs until November 5. Visit for instructions.
