Star borough youngster offered contract by Premier League football giants

AN UP and coming footballing star from Rugby has received an early Christmas present after being offered a contract with West Brom.

Devon West first started kicking a ball when he was aged just two and has played for Baginton Lions since he discovered his passion for the game five years ago.

The seven-year-old, who attends St Matthew’s Primary School, has signed a three-year contract with the Premier League giants and already has ambitions of donning the England shirt when he’s older.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, Devon has been attending Vision Football Academy for two years after he was spotted playing by officials at the club’s youth academy.

He has since been selected to play for the Elite Group on Monday nights, meaning the midfielder travels up the M6 twice a week to refine his skills with the ball.

Proud mum Marcia said: “I had meetings with the head coaches at the end of November about Devon’s future at the club and it was then they wanted to offer him a three-year contract.

“Because he’s only seven he cannot sign the contract until he turns eight in May, however they’ve written a letter of commitment meaning no other club can have Devon now.

“He’ll still be playing for Baginton for now but come 2018 we hope he’ll be playing all over Europe as he’ll be training five times a week.”

As his talent progresses, Devon has already been making the Under 8s team and played against a strong West Ham side last month.

Marcia added: “I’m so proud of him and he deserves this.

“He’s football mad and my daughter Summer enjoys cheering him on from the touchline.”
