THREE new shops are open in Rugby thanks to a new start-up scheme for budding businesses.
The Retail Start-Up Scheme, set up by Rugby First and funded by Rugby Borough Council, aims to fill empty shops in the town centre by helping new businesses set up and develop in the crucial first few months of trading.
The scheme includes a grant, half-price solicitors fees, a rent-free period, extended free banking period, free planning advice and free business start-up support from the Chamber of Commerce.
The three new businesses, Anna Lorimer Art and Framing, The Nest Rugby and Alberts Rugby Ltd have opened their new premises on Henry Street, High Street and Regent Street respectively.
Aftab Gaffar, Managing Director of Rugby First said: “The scheme has undoubtedly been very successful in helping to keep vacancy levels low, improving working relationships across business sectors, attracting and supporting new businesses, ensuring empty units are clean, attractive and appealing and providing a real positive boost to the local economy.
“I am delighted to welcome the new businesses to the town centre. I would encourage people to support them and in doing so help to ensure your town centre continues to develop and thrive.”
Council economy spokeswoman Coun Heather Timms said: “It is pleasing to see these great new businesses opening in Rugby. Opening time can be a difficult period with many expenses such as stock and marketing as well as getting the shop ready, so I hope this grant will make those crucial first few weeks easier.”
