THE GRINCH has stolen the Christmas limelight in Dunchurch.

The mischievous Dr Seuss character has become the latest alter-ego of the Lord John Scott statue which stands in the centre of the village.

Anonymous pranksters have been giving the statue a festive fancy dress costume for over 30 years, with Lord John appearing as an Olympian, The Queen, Spider-Man, a Star Wars stormtrooper, a Minion and Paddingon in recent years.

Chair of Dunchurch Festival Group Robert Collings said: “What the statue is dressed as is always the focus of attention in the area at this time of year, with some even holding sweepstakes as to what it will be, but it is always dressed as a character from a popular film or currently in the media spotlight.”

Two Santas – ‘Dad’ and ‘Lad’ – led proceedings from their motorised sleigh, complete with ‘in-sleigh entertainment system, and provided mulled wine and mince pies.

The group collected £250 for homelessness charity Hope 4.
