Street pastors praised as MP joins in patrol

VOLUNTEERS for Rugby Street Pastors earned the praise of Rugby’s MP as he joined them for a patrol on a Saturday night in the town centre.

Mark Pawsey MP experienced Rugby’s nightlife first-hand, visiting pubs and clubs and talking to door staff and revellers as he patrolled with the pastors – who have been providing a calming influence on Rugby’s streets for nine years.

To set the scene beforehand, he heard about the training programme that each pastor undertakes, the group’s role in the partnership with the Church, Police and Rugby Borough Council, and the impact it has in helping to make Rugby a safer town. This was followed by a tour of the Rugby First CCTV Control Room.

Mr Pawsey said: “The street pastors make an invaluable contribution to our community and to the night time economy in Rugby’s town centre.

“We should all be grateful for the work they do, as they are all volunteers who give up their time to help those in need and make Rugby town centre safer for everyone to enjoy themselves.”

Rugby Street Pastor coordinator Pete Hickey said: “I would like to thank Mark for his comments and for giving up his time – and sleep! – and the interest that he has shown in our work by patrolling with us.”
