THE LIGHTS are green for a Rugby College student to race into a career in Formula 1 after she picked up a prize of a work placement and guaranteed job interview with Formula 1 power unit manufacturer Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP).
Jodi Snelson, 19, a first year engineering student, held off competition from fellow students to be selected by her tutors as the highest achiever on the course.
Jodi’s prize included a £500 cheque and a guaranteed place at their assessment centre for new apprentices in spring 2019.
Mercedes-AMG HPP, based in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, designs and manufactures Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 racing engines and hybrid systems for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.
Jodi said: “I was truly shocked at winning this award, but very excited about the work experience opportunity and I hope that in the future my hard work may lead to a career with Mercedes-AMG HPP.
“I have put loads of effort in with my studies and it is amazing to be recognised.”
The college group’s engineering curriculum leader Gary Elson said: “Congratulations to Jodi, who has excelled in all aspects of the course and has already completed all her first year units at Distinction level.”
A STUDENT studying Health, Social Care and Early Years has been named Rugby College Student of the Year.
Jamie Townsend was recognised for her hard work, dedication and attainment throughout the academic year.

“The lecturers helped me a lot and have shaped me into the learner and practitioner I am today, so I really want to thank them for that.”
