Students' calculated efforts add up to success in national maths challenge

THE SUM of multiple students’ calculated efforts at a Rugby secondary school have added up to success in a national Maths Challenge.

Talented mathematics students from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College have been presented with certificates following their participation in the challenge, run by the UK Mathematics Trust.

The students entered into the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a 60-minute test which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Over 120 students from the school took part, with Isabel Lanceman, Kallum Mackley, Maya Telka, Abdul-Hadi Baig, Magdalena Grochowska, Lily McInally and Hugo Porter presented with a silver award, and a further 34 students receiving a bronze certificate.

Maths teacher Esther Quarmyne, who organised the challenge at Avon Valley, said: “It was amazing to see so many students receive a certificate following their involvement in this competition. Well done to all who took part.”

Headteacher Blake Francis added: “I am very grateful to our maths faculty for giving over 120 students the opportunity to enter this competition, and I am delighted to see lots of our talented students receiving a certificate.”

Each year, the UK Mathematics Trust – a charity which aims to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics – runs a junior, intermediate, and senior maths challenge for students across the UK. The challenge is entered by around 700,000 pupils each year and is the UK’s biggest national maths competition.
