NUMBER-crunchers at Avon Valley School added to their achievements by taking part in a national Maths Challenge.

Fifteen students received certificates following their participation in the UK Mathematics Trust’s annual challenge for students across the UK.

Among them were gold award winner Jamie Saunders from Year 10, who progresses through to the next round of the competition.

Each year the Trust, a charity dedicated to advancing the education of children and young people in mathematics, runs junior, intermediate and senior competitions – the biggest of their kind in the country. Last academic year, over 600,000 pupils from 4,000 schools took part in the challenges.

The Avon Valley students were all entered into the intermediate challenge, which is aimed at students in Year 9 to Year 11.

Faculty leader for maths Debbie Tyas said: “We have lots of able mathematicians in the school and this competition is a wonderful way for them to showcase their ability. The questions are not easy and receiving a certificate should be considered a real honour.”

Head teacher Alison Davies added: “As a maths teacher myself I can really appreciated how complex some of these questions are. I would imagine many adults would struggle to answer them.

“I am proud that these students have received their certificates and I am grateful to the maths faculty for giving the students the opportunity to compete.”
