Stunned Rugby couple scoop quarter-million lottery jackpot

THE MAGIC will never end for a Rugby couple and their four children who are off to Disney World in Florida after landing a £250,000 win on a National Lottery Scratchcard.

Katie Douglas and her husband Carl’s ‘heads are spinning’ after a last minute decision at the till resulted in them scooping the quarter-of-a-million jackpot.

A ‘flustered’ Katie, 33, bought the winning card during a manic Monday (January 25) while she was running late.

She said: “It had been one of the days. I only had time to pop into Tesco for a few things.

“When I got to the till I could see that they didn’t have my usual card. The 250k Red Scratchcard caught my eye as it was brightly coloured so I thought I’d give it a go.

“As I walked out of the store I scratched it and gradually came to a stop as it revealed that I had won.

“I just stood there in disbelief, no screaming, no shouting just silence. It was almost like I was in a daze. I calmly walked back to the counter and asked the lady there to check it.

“I have to admit that I was shaking by this point! The lady scanned it and said it was a winning ticket and advised me to call the National Lottery straight away. I just couldn’t believe it!”

The couple were presented with their cheque at Dunchurch Park Hotel.

The victory tastes particularly sweet as Carl, 47, has been unable to work for the last decade due to illness, and is cared for by his wife.

Carl, who was waiting for Katie in the car, didn’t believe her until the pair went home to call The National Lottery and claim their prize.

Katie said: “Carl kept the scratchcard in his zipped coat pocket until the next day when the man from the lottery visited us to confirm everything and transfer us the money.

“It was a very surreal evening and an amazing morning when everything was confirmed. I still can’t really digest what has happened, our heads are still spinning.”

The couple are now looking forward to buying a few treats for their family and booking a big holiday for them all this summer in Florida.

Katie said: “I can’t wait. We are going for a fortnight and will take in all the sights including Disney World.

“The fact we are able to take a holiday with no expense spared is unbelievable. Also we can treat the kids in the future – birthdays and Christmas all sorted without having to worry. It’s such a great feeling!”
