DUMPED supermarket trolleys will be cleared out of the River Avon in Rugby – seven years after local environmentalists first raised the issue via The Observer.

Rugby Green Party said the stretch of the Avon which flows past Tesco’s Leicester Road superstore had become an ‘appalling dumping ground’.

In 2010, The Observer reported party members had found 21 Tesco trolleys abandoned in the river underneath the Black Path Bridge. This week they returned to find the situation had worsened.

Flashback – In 2010, The Observer reported Green Party members had found 21 Tesco trolleys abandoned in the river underneath the Black Path Bridge.

Green Party member Mark Summers said it was a ‘disgrace’ that one of Britain’s historic waterways was in such a mess.

He said: “It is clear that Tesco are making no effort to put in place a permanent solution to the problem of junk from their store.

“The fact that they hold an an iconic part of our heritage in such disregard belies Tesco’s claim to be a community minded company.

“It would not be tolerated in Stratford Upon Avon and there is no reason why the people of Rugby should be treated as second class citizens with a degraded environment.

“The junk in the Avon gives a feeling that there is no pride in our town and does not encourage others to respect where they live.”

Responding to The Observer’s enquiries, Tesco said it would clean up the mess.

A spokeswoman said: “We are sorry to hear about the abandoned trolleys and have immediately arranged for them to be collected and returned to our Rugby superstore.

“We will also be working with our store to review the situation to ensure the issue is resolved going forward.”

Rugby Green Party is asking the community to email [email protected] to report any concerns about pollution in the River Avon.
