A GLOWING review has praised Rugby Borough Council’s ‘can do’ attitude and its understanding of the communities it serves.
Rugby Borough Council has become the first district or borough council to retain the Equality Framework for Local Government’s ‘excellent’ standard – and remains the only such council to ever meet the standard.
During a two-day visit, a team of independent reviewers found the council worked effectively with communities and tailored services to suit their needs.
Among the initiatives singled out for praise were housing for vulnerable women, a project tackling homelessness in Warwickshire, work experience placements for young people with learning disabilities, improving access to parks and open spaces, and advising residents on energy efficiency.
The review also found staff and councillors had a good understanding of their communities’ different needs.
Coun Derek Poole, Chairman of the council’s Equalities Steering Group, said he was thrilled their ‘unique way of doing things’ had again been recognised.
He said: “I am extremely proud that Rugby is the first shire borough to have been awarded the “excellent” rating by the review team.
“Here at Rugby we are focused on delivering great services tailored to each and every resident and business.
“Not only does this mean we comply with the equality act, it also results in better services for everyone.
“We have already offered to share our success with other councils – I am more than happy to show them the Rugby way.”
Council Executive Director Adam Norburn said: “Officers, councillors and partners from across council services have contributed to this review, and I would like to thank all of them for their help and support.
“Ultimately, however, the review is an assessment of the ‘can do’ attitude that all staff display, focusing on the needs of our customers.”
The review team will issue a full report on its findings later in the year, which will be published on the council website.
