A SWEET idea to cut plastic waste and keep the noise down during shows has been rustled up by a member of Rugby Theatre.
Confectionery on sale at the venue is now eco-friendly and rustle-free thanks to long-time theatre member Michele Goode.
To replace the usual non-recyclable and noisy plastic packaging, often with individually-wrapped sweets, Michele has created Goodiboxes – plastic-free boxes of sweets that stay silent when audience members dip their fingers in.
Michele, who has been a member of the theatre for 20 years and starred in countless productions, said: “The idea came into my mind about 12 months ago, when I went to the theatre and someone sat behind me and rustled their sweets all the way through.
“It did my head in – I had to do something about it and not just moan!”
Michele, who works as a sales manager for a forklift business, put together some designs and – with the help Rugby company Renaissance Creative who came up with the branding – the Goodibox was born.
“The main aims are to be plastic-free, and to cut down on noise pollution and mess,” she said.
The Goodiboxes – which come in 10 different varieties of classic sweets, and include vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options – are on sale during Rugby Theatre’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, which runs until Sunday (February 2).
If they prove popular, they will be used for all films and shows at the Henry Street venue – and maybe even further afield.
Michele said: “We already have some interest brewing. We would like to supply all the theatres in the vicinity and will be getting in touch on the outcome of the trial at Rugby Theatre.
“Eventually my goal is to get all theatres plastic-free with their confectionery.”
