Two-time cancer survivor targets cycling world record

Rugby Editorial 21st Jun, 2017   0

A TWO-TIME cancer survivor is attempting to break the seven day cycling distance world record for charity.

James Golding from Rugby is cycling around his regular training roads in South Warwickshire for at least 251.5 miles a day, in order to break the current record of 2,830 set by Richard Nutt in 2015.

Since narrowly surviving surgery in 2009, the 36 year-old has not only learned to walk again, but has cycled the some 2,700 distance between Los Angeles and Miami in 24 days.

And a road accident and a second cancer diagnosis has not deterred the cyclist – who is now an ambassador of Cancer Research UK – from his latest challenge.

AfterJames was given the all-clear in 2012, he began inspiring others with his brave story, and has raised over £3million for cancer charities.

He said: “Cycling has been instrumental in my recovery from cancer.

“It has provided a vital focus in my path back to health, teaching me about strength, determination, inspiration and survival. I will need to draw on all of these qualities during the seven-day world record attempt.

“The body only knows the limits we impose on it. I hope to demonstrate, particularly to children, that we can overcome any challenge in life by taking one step at a time.”

The attempt, expected to finish on Sunday (June 25), is just the latest in a series of cycling challenges for James, who plans to participate in The Race Across America in 2019.
