THE VINYL revival is alive and well at a Rugby store which is inviting people to spin a disc and see its £20,000 refurbishment at an open day this weekend.

Ashley’s has secured a UK-exclusive demo model of the Yamaha MC Vinyl 500, the first turntable the Japanese electronics giant has produced for 25 years, and is encouraging people to bring their own records along to try the kit for themselves.

There is currently only one of the units in the country and Ashley’s, formerly Trafalgar Electronics, has teamed up with independent music shop Just For The Record, to demonstrate it at its St Matthews Street store on Saturday (October 27), from 10am to 5pm.

Ashley’s is run by husband and wife team Ronnie and Lisa Ashley, who moved into the former home of Frank Ewington Ltd three years ago, an electronics business which had been on the site for nearly 60 years.

Lisa said: “There has been a massive resurgence in demand for vinyl. We’re seeing old-fashioned record shops on the increase, a national Record Store Day where people queue outside shops overnight and, from our side, a definite increase in demand for quality record players.

“It’s a long time since Yamaha produced a turntable and we’re delighted to have secured the UK exclusive to demonstrate it. It’s a product which is in demand.

“The rebrand and refit has made a huge difference to the look of the store and we can’t wait to show it off.”

The store specialises in smart technology, repairs and custom installs, all carried out by Ronnie, an experienced electronics engineer who has worked for the business for 25 years.

Ronnie added; “A lot of our customers have been with us for many decades and a lot of our good reputation is based on word of mouth. Things may look different in store now but it’s still the same friendly faces behind the business.”
