Volunteer nurse from Rugby celebrated among amazing women

Rugby Editorial 9th Oct, 2023   0

A VOLUNTEER nurse from Rugby features in a railway booklet detailing the lives, history and birthplaces of amazing women from areas across the London Northwestern Railway (LNR) network.

Available for free at attractions listed inside the booklet, it details the lives of 27 extraordinary women from different areas between Liverpool and Watford Junction and how their stories can be discovered by rail.

Rugby’s featured amazing woman is volunteer nurse Lady Dorothie Feilding (1889-1935).

Lady Feilding grew up in Newnham Paddox and trained as a nurse at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, before volunteering as an ambulance driver on Belgium’s Western Front.

Dorothie’s bravery earned her the Military Medal, the first woman to be given such an accolade during the war, presented to her by King George V.

Dorothie served in Flanders until the summer of 1917 when she got married. After a brief honeymoon, Dorothie returned to ambulance work in London. Her letters home have been published in a fascinating book, Lady Under Fire on The Western Front.

Attractions in Rugby featured in the free booklet include Rugby Art Gallery & Museum, Caldecott Park and Rugby School.

The booklet was designed by artist Nicky Thompson and written by author Richard Lysons. LNR and Women in Community Rail funded the booklet which includes short biographies and relevant attractions for passengers to visit.

Vicky Cropper-Clarke, LNR community strategy manager, said:

“I am delighted to launch the Amazing Women by Rail booklet which highlights so many stories by incredible women across our rail network.

“There will be copies available at selected stations and passengers will be able to view the booklet online. I hope this encourages passengers to explore towns and cities along the line to discover the fascinating history of these remarkable women.”
