Volunteers turn mountaineers for disability charity

Andy Morris 7th May, 2018   0

VOLUNTEERS will become mountaineers in aid of disabled people in Rugby.

Supporters of New Directions will lace up their walking boots for a sponsored walk over the Peak District on June 3.

Money raised will help to pay for specialist equipment for people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and autism to improve computer based learning, internet access and develop social media skills and safety.

The eight-to-ten mile walk, expected to take around five hours, will take in the varied landscape and beautiful views of an area called The Roaches.

Organiser Simon Hurlow-Jones said his own experience of walking in the Peak District made such a strong impression that he wanted to share it with his workmates.

He said: “I had been looking for an opportunity to fund-raise to provide specialist equipment to help the people who New Directions supports to access the internet safely for everyday tasks, use online services and socialise with family and friends.

“When offered the chance to use a free minibus from Warwickshire County Council I thought that this would be a great opportunity to get people together, raise funds and awareness of our charity.”

The walkers hope to raise £1,000. Visit https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/NDPeakDistrictSponsoredWalk to donate.
