Warks councils unite in fraud crackdown

Rugby Editorial 30th Jan, 2016 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

RUGBY Borough Council has joined forces with other councils in the area to crack down on county-wide fraud.

The Warwickshire Counter Fraud Partnership has been formed by Warwickshire County Council and the five district and borough councils to deter and prevent fraud.

All residents in Warwickshire who receive or apply for social care grants, tenancy and council tax discounts will have their details shared across each authority and data matched so anything out of the ordinary can be immediately spotted.

The partnership hopes this will help identify potential fraud, and any errors, more quickly.

Residents are reminded to notify their local council of changes to their circumstances, including children turning 18 or renting out properties, otherwise they may be committing fraud.

Warwickshire County Councillor Kam Kaur said: “Some members of the public may not be aware that a change in their personal circumstances can lead to them committing fraud.

“I urge all residents in Warwickshire to contact their local District or Borough Council or the County Council to update their details with any recent changes to circumstances and help to reduce fraud within Warwickshire.”

Coun Helen Taylor from Rugby Borough Council added: “Fraud is something that all local authorities, including Rugby Borough Council, take extremely seriously and we already have established processes with various agencies including HMRC, the Cabinet Office and the Department for Works and Pensions.

“This expansion of our collaborative working enables us to continue to protect the public purse.”
